A tiger is one of the larger species of feline native to Asia.
Indiana Jones has had numerous encounters with tigers.
Adventures with tigers[]
According to legend, the god of war Kartikeya in the shape of tiger fought a warrior in combat after which the tiger and man became one under the name Sherdil.[1]
One of the statues fashioned by the 16th-century artist Wohat came in the form of a tiger.[2]
In India in 1914, Prince Kasim Khan was suspected of being a weretiger when one of the big cats was roaming the area.[3]
During the later half of World War I, Indiana Jones encountered Tigers in a Tower in Tibet near the city of Lhasa while trying to stop the Germans from obtaining the mustard gas device.[4]
It was after defending himself from a tiger called The Great Khan in India that Indiana Jones discovered the Thuggee cult was resurgent at the City of Lightning in 1933.[5]
The Black Dragon Triad used red Tiger Strength Potions to enhance the damage in their attacks. Indy found and used some of these potions in 1935 in places like the Golden Lotus Opera House and the Black Dragon Fortress.[6]
Man-eating tigers lived in the jungles surrounding Pankot Palace.[7]
In 1939 Indy was ambushed by a white tiger in the Himalayas in while searching for the Staff of Kings in Suya Desh, Nepal.[8]
Behind the scenes[]
While developing the story of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, writers Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz proposed having the Thuggee's backstory revealed during a tiger hunt in order to maintain audience interest in the plot. However, Steven Spielberg resisted of the idea, leading to the suggestion of the banquet sequence instead, which met with the approval of both Spielberg and George Lucas due its high grossness level.[9]
As writing of the script progressed, the first draft of the film included Indiana Jones, Willie Scott and Short Round spotting a menacing "seven-hundred-pound Bengal tiger" after jumping on a life raft, leading Indy to realize that they are in India before the tiger is driven away by a shaman.[10]
In the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Read-Along Adventure, instead of escaping from being impaled by a mad rhinoceros, Indy is described as having avoided a tiger's claws on the circus train.[11] In the Storybook the tiger is identified as a Bengal tiger.[12]
In the cancelled novelization of Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings Indy and Maggie O'Malley saw a white Bengal Tiger in Topkapi Palace zoo in Istanbul while trying to escape on the back of an elephant. It paced in it's cage as they escaped.[13]
