Living in London, Tom Newton had three children with his wife: Edie, Georgie and a baby, the latter of whom was conceived around 1915 ahead of Tom fighting for the British military during World War I.[1]
However, the soldier's weekly wage suddenly stopped reaching home around April 1916 while he was overseas in an area known to have experienced heavy casualties so Mrs. Newton, unable to gain information from the country's War Office, strongly suspected that her partner had been killed in action but the bureaucracy was slow to inform her.[1]

By May, with no money, the Newton family were faced with being homeless and destitute. During a chance encounter with Indiana Jones, a newly arrived American who had recently signed up with the Belgian Army, and his girlfriend Vicky Prentiss, an aspiring writer, the pair learned of Mrs Newton's circumstances and offered to cover the rent to tide her over. Mrs Newton, aghast that she was being offered charity and suspecting that her husband wouldn't approve, tried to refuse but Jones, recognizing from an earlier experience in China that the woman likely needed to save face, framed the gesture as a loan and quickly moved matters on when Mrs Newton started to protest that the amount was too generous.[1]
