Vere Gordon Childe was an Australian philologist and archaeologist who suggested that cultural history theory of diffusion, as an explanation of the relationship between cultures, was not the only way cultures connected. He suggested major revolutionary change in societies: the Neolithic revolution and the Urban Revolution. He was one of the major excavators of Skara Brae in 1928.

In 1957, a student in the Marshall College library recognized Professor Henry Jones, Jr. after he had skidded to a stop on Mutt Williams' motorcycle in the main reading room. He asked Jones about Hargrove's normative culture model, but Jones suggested instead that the student read Vere Gordon Childe's works on diffusionism instead, as Childe had spent much of his life in the field.
