Waite Hoyt was an American professional baseball player. He played as a star pitcher for a number of teams including the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers. He also worked several jobs in the off season, including as an assistant undertaker, which led to his nickname of The Merry Mortician.

In 1938, he pitched his last professional game, as a member of the Dodgers. Dodgers fan Marie Arnoux was in the audience, and recalled this event to Indiana Jones and George McHale in 1943.
