Jones: "You think Abraham used it?"
Lawrence: "The Bible says...that he brought his flocks out of the desert and watered them there."
Indiana Jones and Thomas Edward Lawrence[src]

The Well of Abraham was a historical water source in Beersheba, within the Ottoman Empire during World War I, associated with the biblical narrative of Abraham. It was an important target during the Battle of Beersheba of 1917.

History[]

In Biblical times, Abraham brought his sheep flocks from out of the desert and into Beersheba and used the Well to water them.[1]

In 1917, Indiana Jones, while working as a spy for French intelligence, was sent to Beersheba to keep an eye on the wells and make sure they were not destroyed. While there he worked with Maya, an agent he was working under the disguise of a belly-dancer. The two met by the wells and Indy remarked how the water was the best he had ever tasted. Maya revealed her true appearance to Jones and the two kissed under the stars by the Well. The next morning the attack began and Maya revealed herself to Indy as a double-agent, betraying him in the process but he and another spy were able fool them and slip away, trying their hardest to insure that the water sources were not destroyed by the Ottomans. The wells were vital to the Australian Light Horse Brigade who needed the water desperately. While some wells were destroyed during the attack, Indy was able to stop German Officer Schiller from blowing up the rest. The rest of the Ottoman forces retreated, allowing the Australians and their horses to have a much needed drink.[1]
