William Cunnington was a 19th century archaeologist who had worked at Stonehenge.
Biography[]
During his work at Stonehenge, archaeologist William Cunnington left a bottle of port under the landmark's slaughter stone where it was eventually 'discovered' over a century later by William Hawley.[1]
Legacy[]
Although student Deirdre Campbell would pre-empt his joke, Indiana Jones referenced Cunnington's actions and Hawley's subsequent find during his London University archaeology class in 1925.[1]
