William Henry Sleeman was a British army major who in 1830 managed to penetrate the Thuggee cult and apprehend its leaders. Indiana Jones, in 1935, described him as a very courageous man.[1]
An 1857 clipping from The Illustrated World News described Sleeman as a captain who started his effort to eliminate the Thuggee in 1828, under the leadership of Lord William Bentinck. Sleeman and his forces captured thousands of Thuggee, and over 400 were hanged. Indiana Jones kept a copy of this article in his journal.[2]
