Williams was dean of students at the University of Chicago in the 1920s.

Before becoming dean of students at the University of Chicago, Williams was a psychology professor. When student Indiana Jones's prank on Founding Fathers Day went wrong, Dean Williams sat on a committee to decide his future along with university president Mallory Mulhouse.

Aware of the student's awkward relationship with his father, Williams decided during the meeting that the prank — which saw effigies of the Founding Fathers hanged as a statement on democracy in practice — was an outburst against Henry Jones, Sr.

Ultimately, however, the group settled for an apology from the student.
