Winchester was a college student attending Barnett College. In the fall of 1937, before the fall semester had started, he was cruising through town with three of his Sigma Phi fraternity brothers, when they encountered Professor Jones in a fight with several attackers at the home of Professor Uribe del Arco. After he and his brothers scared off the two thugs, they checked in with Jones to make sure he was unharmed. Uribe shook Winchester's hand, thanking him and subtly shooing him away. Jones took the hint and also got Winchester and his friends to depart - telling them to hurry onto the school rally.
