Winford was an academic whose work formed part of the text for an archaeology course taught by Professor Henry Jones, Jr. at Hunter College which, at least in part, covered the Siege of Syracuse.
For his last day of teaching in August 1969, Jones had assigned pages 131 through 171 of Winford only to find that his disinterested and distracted students hadn't bothered to do the reading. Although one of the attendees was able to engage with the subject—Jones's own estranged goddaughter who had inserted herself into the the lecture unrecognized by the professor—their rapport was curtailed by news that the Apollo 11 astronauts were on television.
