Wolfgang Schwartz, nicknamed "Wolferl", was a Nazi radio operator based out of Gizeh, Egypt in 1937.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Wolfgang Schwartz's mother had wanted her child to become a musician, but he joined the military instead as part of the Nazi ranks and was known among his friends as "Wolferl".[1]
Operation Großer Kreis[]
By October 1937, Wolfgang Schwartz had been assigned to Third Reich Special Antiquities Collection archaeologist Emmerich Voss' expedition in Giza, Egypt as a radio operator where multiple digs were carried out in pursuit of a stone tied to the mystery of the Great Circle.[1]
However, around October 21, another Nazi soldier named Anton Ritter tricked Schwartz into looting Voss' safe and the pair conspired to temporarily hide the gold in a secluded ancient Egyptian tomb away from the main excavation sites and come back for it the following morning. On returning to the antechamber, however, Schwartz began to express regret at betraying the Reich, incensing Ritter who threatened his life. Feeling cornered, Schwartz drew his gun but missed his shot and got bludgeoned by the soldier with a hammer, who then used it to collapse the tunnel entrance, sealing Schwartz inside the tomb.[1]
Injured and with the breathable air thinning, the dying Schwartz had enough time to log the circumstances of his demise before passing away.[1]
Legacy[]
Wolfgang Schwartz's apparent desertion was formally logged four days later by Captain Klaus Schmidt, who asked anyone with information of his whereabouts to assist in tracking him down. Voss' American rival Indiana Jones, who was secretly investigating his interest in the Great Circle as well, found the Nazi soldier and his last words that same day and felt some empathy over the cruel manner of his murder if not necessarily the man. Although the observing Anton Ritter tried to blindside Jones, the archaeologist ensured that the Nazi didn't reclaim the stolen gold.[1]

Wolfgang Schwartz is a character in "A Thief's Promise", an optional side mission in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. In Klaus Schmidt's desertion report, the character has the forename Lukas instead.[1]
