The World War One Ace was a retired pilot from World War I, who sided with the Nazis during their search for the Joneses aboard the D-138 in 1938.
Biography[]
At some point, the pilot was enlisted in the German air force and fought during World War I. During that period, according to his stories, he performed several heroic feats.[1]
In 1938, the World War One Ace was a fellow passenger of the zeppelin with Indiana Jones and his father when it left Germany. During the trip, he drank heavily and told war stories to the other passengers in order to impress them, apparently attracting their attention.[1]
His willingness to ally with the Nazis was revealed when a Gestapo agent called for any loyal countrymen on board to help him pursue the Joneses, and the ace volunteered along with a Zeppelin Crewman. However, he was so drunk that when he and the agent tried to follow the Joneses in a second biplane after the crewman was nearly killed, he neglected to turn the motor on and they fell to their deaths.[1]

The World War One Ace was portrayed by the late Frederick Jaeger in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.[2]
The sequence in which he is killed along with his partner was cut from the final version of the film because director Steven Spielberg considered it too long.[3] However, the scene remains in the film's novelization[1] and comic book adaptation.[4]
