Wyndham Abbey was a disused Welsh monastery near Merthyr Tydfil.
History[]
After Wyndham Abbey fell into ruin, it became occupied by an ancient Druidic order who used it to dig a passage into the mountains to access the Lucifer Chamber, a supposed gateway to Hell, until their activities were eventually displaced by the discovery of coal in the area and the growth of the mining industry.[2]
However, in 1936, Austin Coleridge, who took control of the local mine to excavate the chamber, claimed that the druids were actually alchemists who inhabited Agharta, a city of gold located at the Earth's core which was accessible from a door inside the Lucifer Chamber.[2]
That year, to rescue his friend Marcus Brody from Coleridge, Indiana Jones led a group of disgruntled Merthyr Tydfil miners—put out of work by Coleridge replacing them with machines—to Wyndham Abbey and used its secret passage to successfully get the jump on Coleridge's forces.[2]
