Wyndham Abbey was a disused Welsh monastery near Merthyr Tydfil.

History

After Wyndham Abbey fell into ruin, it became occupied by an ancient Druidic order who used it to dig a passage into the mountains to access the Lucifer Chamber, a supposed gateway to Hell, until their activities were eventually displaced by the discovery of coal in the area and the growth of the mining industry.

However, in 1936, Austin Coleridge, who took control of the local mine to excavate the chamber, claimed that the druids were actually alchemists who inhabited Agharta, a city of gold located at the Earth's core which was accessible from a door inside the Lucifer Chamber.

That year, to rescue his friend Marcus Brody from Coleridge, Indiana Jones led a group of disgruntled Merthyr Tydfil miners—put out of work by Coleridge replacing them with machines—to Wyndham Abbey and used its secret passage to successfully get the jump on Coleridge's forces.
