Zeus was the king of the gods and sky deity in Greek and, as Jupiter, Roman mythology.
Biography[]
The son of Rhea, Zeus/Jupiter was connected to at least one of the stories related to the creation of the Cornucopia, the Horn of Plenty. Zeus was placed under the care of Cretan king Melisseus's daughter who fed the boy on the milk of the great goat Amalthea. As he grew in size and strength, Zeus broke off one of Amalthea's horns.
Zeus was also connected to legends surrounding the Aegis which claimed that the god wielded the shield whilst summoning great and terrible storms
Behind the scenes[]
The son of the god Kronos and Rhea, Zeus overthrew his father to become the ruler of gods and mortals. In addition to his responsibilities as king of the gods, Zeus was associated with storms and carried a lightning bolt, which he readily used against those who offended the gods. He was married to the goddess Hera, but had several illegitimate children with several lovers, including Apollo, Hermes, Hercules and Dionysus.
